Sweet Friends ~ A Legna Pâtisseries ~ Hong Kong

I have to be really honest here – I’m not a huge fan of the typical Chinese wedding cake. You know, the ones covered in cream and fruit. Yes, they certainly taste amazing – light, fluffy and well, fruity:)… but for a stylish wedding, I do love wedding cakes as gorgeous as the ones created by Hong Kong cake designer A Legna Patisseries.

I recently had the greatest pleasure in working with Angela and her designs are GORGEOUS. She spent so much time and effort in creating a delicious dessert table and having since seen more of her work, there’s no denying she has this amazing  and natural flair.

Here’s a little more about the very lovely Angela of A Legna Patisseries -

As founder of A Legna Pâtisseries, Angela specializes in couture designs. Following her career as an interior designer, she brought her unique artistic vision to life when she launched A Legna Pâtisseries. This is where design meets desserts.

Inspired by her absolute love for all things beautiful and passion for baking, she creates different kinds of edible arts and various delicious sweets. Freshly baked with fine quality ingredients, from real butter, to fresh eggs, complimented with high-quality vanilla for a rich and delicious taste. Each cake is carefully handcrafted for events such as, Weddings, Birthdays, Engagements, Baby Showers, Corporate events and many more.

It’s all about passionate baking and enjoyment in creating visual masterpieces while creating memories of taste.

The intricate detailing absolutely amazes me! Such fine detailing, made by hand…

So to all you lovely people who are due to wed in Hong Kong… please, I beg, take a peek at A Legna for your wedding cake!

Amy + Lee ~ Down Hall + Yi Ban Wedding Film

Welcome back! I guess you’ve been so looking forward to seeing Amy and Lee’s wedding film after their lovely photographs here. I, of course couldn’t wait to share this with you – a day of laughter, traditions, culture and sweet romance!

I’ve always said and always will believe that getting your day captured on film is one element every wedding should have. Having the opportunity to re-live your day {it’s true what people say, the day goes so fast!} seeing the people who shared the day celebrating with you again, hearing their voices… and I promise, you really do feel like you’ve stepped right back into those very magical moments. You wedding day.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful film of Amy and Lee’s wonderful day captured by Beautiful Life.

Amy + Lee ~ Down Hall + Yi Ban Wedding ~ London England

Hello lovely people! It’s been some time since I’ve blogged a Double Happiness wedding, so that’s exactly what we have today  :)  Some of you will know that I specialise in Chinese weddings and the Double Happiness topic has always been a hit here. This is a part of my blog I’m really proud to have as it reminds me of one of the reasons why I started Carmen Weddings. Just over 3 years ago, I wanted to start a little inspirational home for couples who are planning their Chinese wedding and ever since, I’ve had great opportunities in sharing the wonderful and colourful celebrations as well as be a part of some of the weddings here in England. And I so cannot wait to be a part of many more too!

Today I’m so happy to be sharing a very lovely {and fun!} Double Happiness day with you from Beautiful Life.

Joy and Shaun of Beautiful Life have a huge amount of experience in capturing Chinese weddings in both photography and in film, and I’m always excited to share their work with you.

This is the wedding of Lee and Amy. The bride and groom had their fun Door Games, the Chinese Tea Ceremony and also their beautiful civil ceremony at Down Hall Hotel.

Amy and Lee’s wedding day had the combined elegance of a beautiful English country house and the traditional banquet at the contemporary Yi Ban restaurant  in London. Perfect!

It seems to me that just having the morning games didn’t satisfy their Tze-Mui’s and Hing Dai’s… so for their evening banquet, more games there were. This time for the bride and groom!

What a lovely day it was! Thank you so much to Beautiful Life for sharing with us. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow as I’ll be sharing Amy and Lee’s film highlights.

Five Minutes With ~ She Make Up Studio ~ Hong Kong

Wedding. Make Up. Hair. Now this is one popular topic when it comes to my email inbox.

I receive regular emails from brides asking for my opinion when it comes to their make up for a Chinese wedding or where to begin their search for an artist who has experience applying make-up for brides with East-Asian skin tone. Well first of all there is one thing I really believe in – an experienced and professional artist can work with all skin tones and eye shape {something I get asked a lot about!} and my opinion is you need to find that very artist who is experienced and has an amazing kit! But you must also communicate very clearly to the artist the look you would like to achieve… and please have a trial if you can! Collect images online or from magazines to help you illustrate your point. Bridal hair and make-up in the UK can be slightly different to the looks in Hong Kong but I feel brides in Hong Kong are edging towards the natural look. Which is a big Yay from me! However, if a bride is wearing a traditional Kwa, you can get away with  stronger colours to complement the rich and elaborate dress.

For some time I’ve been wanting to share more with my Hong Kong readers and with brides who are planning a Hong Kong Destination Wedding. For this reason, over the next few weeks you will see more posts on vendors who are based in Hong Kong and today I would like to introduce to you make-up artist, Sara of She Make Up Studio. I worked alongside Sara while I was in the city on a styled shoot and she’s fantastic.

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes With She make Up Studio.

She Make Up Studio Hong Kong

Hi Sara, so lovely to meet again! Please tell us a little about who you are and what you do.

I was born in Hong Kong but studied in Australia.  I went to a make-up school at the same time when I was at University doing my Bachelor of Communication. After I graduated I worked in the PR industry full-time and as a freelance make-up artist, but gradually I turned my make-up career as a lifetime job.

Where are you based?

Hong Kong, but I’m available for destination weddings too.

Brilliant! So, do you work with international clients?

Yes, sometimes I have a bride travel from overseas who are hosting their wedding in Hong Kong. I’m in a lucky position where most brides book me based on my portfolio on my website.

Please tell us about what you did before you launched She Make Up Studio?

I was in PR for a Thai cosmetics brand called Giffarine and also for La Mer. I was also freelancing for bridal, commercial and studio shoots in hair and makeup.

Most brides want something a little different and I find at times the bridal make-up look in Hong Kong is quite different to here in the UK. Is there a particular look you are asked to create more of?

Personally I think Hong Kong bridal hair and make-up is a little heavier, even in terms of service time. I usually get booked for 8 – 12 hours a day where I have to be on standby to help them change their hair and make-up – a natural day time look then to the evening red carpet glamour. However I still believe natural elegant hair and makeup is timeless, so I will consider my style to be in-between the Western and Chinese look.

Chinese wedding make up artist

Many of my readers are Chinese brides who are wearing a Kwa or Qipao on her wedding day – do you have any make-up style tips for them?

Always have your hair up for Chinese gown since it already has a mandarin collar which covers your neck. Lighter shadow but red lips match red Chinese gowns perfectly.

What advice would you give a bride-to-be when looking for her perfect make up artist?

Think about what sort of style or look you are aiming for, look at the artists’ job reference and see who matches what you like. Never just take recommendations from friends without looking at the work yourself, because you may find the referral from your friend is not really doing exactly the style that you actually want.

Is there a trend you’re seeing right now?

Even though I’ve mentioned that the Hong Kong bridal makeup are with more colors, I see more brides now prefer to go with natural and timeless. They understand how they don’t want any regrets when looking at the photos 10 years later!

If you wasn’t based in Hong Kong – where in the world would you like to be?

I always want to go back to Australia, I miss everything there! My fiancé’s an Aussie too, so perhaps we might move to Australia some years later, no plans yet of course! If I can work around I would be so happy to work in UK too

And so I hear you’re getting married next month – so excited for you! Do share with us your top wedding planning tip!

Thank you! My advice is don’t ask for too many opinions from other, regarding things like the dress, make-up, decoration, venue etc. Opinions will just lead you to confusion.

Tea or Coffee? And how would you like it?!

Just water please! I need to keep me teeth white for my wedding  :)

XiAn ~ China ~ Filled With Incredible History + Culture

Yay! This year I finally made it to Xi’An in China!

For some time, I’ve been wanting to share some of my own travel experiences as a way to share what I do with my time away from the wedding world and maybe as a way to give you some travel and honeymoon ideas. Although Xi’An is not a blue sea – blue sky  destination but for the history and culture loving couple, this is perfect. Three to four days is enough if your aim is to just see the world famous historical sites. This was the city of crazy fun and was such an adventure! I have never soaked up so much history in my life  and not for one second did I miss what our personal tour guide taught us. It was just too interesting and everything was such an eye opener. Paul and I loved every second of being there.

I’ll never forget the very first journey we took from the airport to the hotel. The city was concrete grey, it was red lantern colourful and it was crazy like I’ve never experienced before. It was mesmerising. It was madness. It was wonderful!

Our very first visit was to the Ancient City Wall – it’s the most complete wall in China and one of the largest ancient military defense systems in the World.

I loved watching some of the local people play Mahjong in the streets!

Katie Melua once sang there are 9 million bicycles in China… true or not, here’s two of them;)

Spring had truly arrived. It was so pretty!

Before we visited the real Terracotta Army Museum, we had the opportunity to visit a factory where they created replicas as tourist souvenirs. It was great to watch the people hand make them. What was incredible to see was how long it takes them to make each one today, so when I think to how the life-size army was created thousands of years ago… how did they make them all by hand?!

Inside Pit One – I have seen thousands of photos in brochures and magazine prior to our visit but nothing had prepared me for how breath-taking and the vast size that it was when we stood right there. Pit Two and Three were just as incredible in their own unique way. With excavation still on-going, I wonder that if I ever get the chance to visit again some years later,  would the excavation be complete.  Each and every warrior had such intricate detailing and every face was unique. Such creativity from 3000 years ago!

The magnificent Bell & Drum Tower in the city of Xi’An which was originally built in 1384. This now sits proudly in the centre of the city where busy traffic of cars, people, motorbikes and lorries manoeuvre around day and night.  That was an experience in itself!

In the evening we watched the Tang Dynasty Show – fabulous colours, culture and we were treated to delicious dinner as we soaked up the atmosphere!

Me and Paul at The Wildgoose Pagoda – an ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists.

Thank you Xi’An for such an incredible trip and opening my eyes to what amazing history this world has. I loved every second of my trip and one city I’m so, so glad I’ve had the opportunity to visit. We drank copious amounts of Chinese tea, we ate some fabulous local food and with my limited understanding on Mandarin, we had some language barriers when we were minus David our tour guide. But it was all part of the fun and exploring more of the country where my ancestors originated from.

Come back soon to see more of my second destination – my second home. Hong Kong! xoxo

Happy Anniversary Trina + Joel

I adore a fusion wedding. When two cultures merge as one, it isn’t only the togetherness of the couple on their special day – it’s when two families become one; and this was the sweet feeling I had at Trina and Joel’s wedding.

Trina and Joel’s family traveled from all over the world, including Dubai, China and Australia, for their wedding here in Staffordshire, and on that very sunny day last year, I was so proud to have been there to witness them become husband and wife. The bride and groom asked me to co-ordinate their wedding to ensure all their details and their Chinese Tea Ceremony flowed smoothly. And on the day, with the gorgeous sun shining, we all knew it was going to be perfect. And it was!

I’ll never forget how welcome all their family and friends made me feel right from the beginning.

A Very Happy Anniversary to you both!

Square Book Sunday | Amy + Neil at Holme Pierrepont Hall

Hello friends, I hope you’ve had a really lovely week and what do you have planned for today?  It’s been one of those busy-but exactly- how-I-like-it weeks  as I worked on the final preparations for Amy and Neil’s wedding at Holme Pierrepont Hall, and my, what gorgeous weather did we have on Friday. Lucky us!

Amy and Neil were married at the stunning St Mary’s Church in Nottinghamshire and after their service, they hosted their intimate reception at Holme Pierre Pont Hall. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy working for such an adorable couple who had such lovely family and friends, it was fantastic to work alongside this very lovely and fun photographer. She just has that magic touch in putting couples at ease, and having worked with Emma before, I know how stunning her photos are going be. I cannot wait to see them.

Holme Pierrepont Hall Wedding

Holme Pierre Pont Hall is a local wedding venue to Carmen Weddings – the venue an early Tudor Manor house and the home to the Brackenbury family. A place with stunning gardens and the flowers are beginning to look gorgeous now. A girls gotta love pretty, pink blooms!

So, I will be back again with more but in the meantime, do hop on over to Emma White’s website and call by on her Facebook page because you’ll catch a sneak peek of the lovely Amy and Neil right there! I’m off now to take my sweet Pugsie girl for her Sunday stroll and I hope you enjoy your sweet Sunday too.
