Samantha + Asa Part II

As featured in ‘White Weddings’ Spring 2011 Issue

Hey it’s Friday and of course it’s such a great feeling when I can share such goodies with you before we hit the weekend. Welcome back for Part II of Samantha and Asa’s Oriental. Vintage. Butterflies. wedding. I guess you have all been pretty excited to see what the rest of this wedding would bring, well, here it is!

A day filled with love, emotions and such loving family and friends. Throughout the day I was made to feel so welcome by everyone. Sam and Asa had incredibly lovely bridesmaids, a Best Man who made me choke up with his speech {but not quite as much as the grooms speech!} and just as fab and helpful Ushers.

Yesterday was all about from ‘I Do’ to the Chinese Tea Ceremony… today I share with you more stunning photos of the newlyweds, the Wedding Breakfast then flowing into their Evening Reception… with more details written by the lovely bride, Sam… and once again, thank you to Sean and Sam of The Angel Images for allowing me to share such wonderful photographs.

Red (and Purple) Letter Day

The feel and look I was going for was a mixture of modern with vintage – I wanted the wedding to feel fun but also fit in with the vintage look of the venue.

For the English element, I wanted our wedding to be colourful and fun so I chose Cadbury purple and ivory for our wedding party and my love of butterflies was the common theme that linked the whole wedding together!

For the Chinese element, I wanted to include the Chinese tea ceremony into the day as I wanted to respect my elders especially my grandma so I knew I had to include red into the day. I knew it was a lucky colour so there was touches of red throughout the day which included my qipao.

Let There Be Cake

After looking through endless wedding magazines, my husband and I came across a gorgeous designer cake – however, we couldn’t justify the designer price tag either so my mother in law’s friend offered to make us the cake to our own specification. With this in mind, we decided on a three tier heart shaped cake with each tier being different flavours – lemon drizzle, chocolate and sponge with buttercream. This was then decorated with fabric feather butterflies which matched the butterflies that were on the table centrepieces to tie everything in and purple ribbon to keep the theme consistent.

Food, Glorious Food

We had a traditional English wedding breakfast at Holdsworth House as they weren’t able to cater for the big Chinese banquet.  As a little touch to the Chinese side, we had Chinese fortune cookies as the wedding favours and these were packaged up in little takeaway boxes.

Joining Us From Near And Far

I was overwhelmed when it came to the actual day and seeing all our friends and family who travelled from all over the UK but I was most happy to see my cousin who had travelled from Hong Kong to be there with us! It was only a small wedding with about 60 guests during the day as we wanted to keep it intimate but in the evening, we had an additional 70 guests who came to celebrate and party the night with us!

First Dance as Husband and Wife

Our first dance was to Michael Buble – Everything. We didn’t want to have a slow romantic song as we didn’t just want to sway so  we wanted to have something that we could have a little dance to. After hearing the song – we thought that it was quite appropriate since we are each other’s ‘everything’…

Favourite Part Of The Day

My favourite part of the day has got to be when I walked down the aisle – it just became very real that I was getting married and the emotions took over me. I got soo nervous just before I walked down the aisle, I was clutching onto my dad’s arm so tightly. The first person I actually saw was my mum who burst into tears as soon as she saw me. She said later that she was so overwhelmed at how beautiful I looked that she couldn’t help it – this meant it started me off and then all I could do was focus on Asa. He looked so handsome and I just felt so happy to know that I was going to be getting married that day and I was going to become his wife…

Advice For Future Brides To Be

My advice is to enjoy every minute – it goes sooo quickly! I would definitely take a step back with your new husband and take in the whole day and soak in the atmosphere!

If you can afford to stretch the budget, I would also suggest that you get a videographer as its been the best money spent – when we watched our wedding video, I got quite emotional watching the whole day especially the ceremony and vows and also felt so touched at all the lovely messages that our guests had left for us on the DVD. It also makes you realise how much you miss when you are in the middle of it all so it was brilliant to be able to watch it all again and reliving that special day!

Less Stress = More Enjoyment

I didn’t have a wedding planner to plan my day as I wanted to put my own personal touches into the wedding so I planned to every last detail. To ensure the smooth running of the day though – I did hire Carmen from Carmen Weddings to help to do ‘On The Day Co-Ordination.’ Before I hired Carmen, my only worry was that all my planning and hard work and all the little details would be overlooked or not get done as we had quite a lot of things going on, so hiring Carmen was the best thing ever!

She helped co-ordinate all my details and made sure everything ran on time. I would definitely suggest that if you are able to afford then I would go for it (especially if you want to have a Chinese inspired wedding then Carmen is your girl!!) – it eased so much pressure off me as I knew that everything would be set up as I wanted it to look like and I knew that she would sort out any hiccups without having to let me know!

My husband appreciated Carmen’s help very much too as it meant that he didn’t have to worry about setting everything up or what others had to do as this was all taken out of his hands – all he had to do was settle his nerves before the wedding with a drink or two! 🙂 With Carmen on board, I knew that all my details and everything I visualised my wedding would look like – it all happened!!! It just meant that Asa and I were able to enjoy the wedding and the lovely company of everyone who attended whilst Carmen worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we had the perfect day!

Carms – I was working away when I happened to be walking past Sam whilst she was having some beautiful photos taken. She then called me over for a photograph. This is such a sweet momento for me… Thank you so much Sam.

BIG Thanks

My husband and I would like to offer a big thanks to our photographers Sean & Sam who took so many beautiful pictures for us – they knew I loved my photographs so they took over 1600+ photos for us to pick from! Thanks to Kelvin and his dad from Impress Video who captured the whole day beautifully on video! I want to also say thanks to Bev from Little Bit of Eden who created my gorgeous bouquet and all the gorgeous flowers! I would also like to thank Trish at The Swanky Bride for the exceptional advice on helping me choose my wedding gown. Another thanks would be to Carmen – you honestly did an amazing job! 🙂

It’s been such a delight to not just being able to feature Samantha and Asa’s wedding with you but for me, to have also worked for such a kind and lovely couple, who are clearly so in love with each other.

Thank you to Sam and Asa for not only letting me share your big day with Smitten’s readers but also for the lovely and unexpected thank you gift and card on your big day. Wishing you both a very happy and lifelong marriage together…Carms x
